 The Ignite Fund is a fund for student entrepreneurs at Memorial University. If you have taken initial steps in validating your idea and starting a business, this fund is for you. We will help you use up to $2,000 to refine your business model, prototype or validate a growth model. You will also receive mentoring on how to maximize the effectiveness of the funding and increase the learning per dollar spent.

Eligibility

  • Student teams or individuals of whom at least 50% are enrolled at Memorial
  • Have completed a lean canvas for the idea
  • Applicants must be working on/in pre-revenue startups with less than $5,000 in sales and have not received any government or private funding of more than $5,000 (Family / own money is acceptable).
  • Have completed customer-centric market validation (customer interviews, customer interest, or sales).
  • Former recipients of the Ignite and Mel Woodward Cup funding can apply but not with the same or similar business idea or company that was awarded the fund previously.
  • The use of funds is not limited to certain eligible expenses but make sure to check what expense categories MCE funding won't cover here.

Eligibility will be determined at the sole discretion of the Memorial Centre for Entrepreneurship. 

MCE will respond to you within 5 business days after the close of applications to schedule an interview if requirements are met.

 The Spark Fund is a fund for student entrepreneurs at Memorial University. If you have a new business idea and need some guidance to get started, this fund is for you. We will help you use up to $500 to test the potential of your idea. You will receive mentoring on how to maximize the effectiveness of the funding you spend and increase the learning per dollar spent.

The Memorial Centre for Entrepreneurship (MCE) is looking for applications for a limited number of Entrepreneurial Work Term (EWT) and Entrepreneurial Internships (EI) positions for entrepreneurial students with a business idea or with an interest in the health sector. Our EWT/IN positions are available to undergraduate and graduate students alike. Below is a description of the different opportunities available:

Entrepreneurial Work Term: You have a business idea that you want to pursue and you would like to have an entrepreneurial work term so you can get paid to work on your idea. Or, you already started a business and you want help taking it to the next level! This opportunity is available for students in co-op degree programs at Memorial University.

Entrepreneurial Internship: You have a business idea that would like to be paid to work on during an academic semester and your program doesn’t offer a work term option? We want to talk with you! This opportunity is available for students in non-co-op degree programs at Memorial University. The Entrepreneurial Internship is an extra-curricular opportunity that does not provide academic credit toward your degree.

Entrepreneurial Work Term and Entrepreneurial Internship in health: You will “job shadow” various professionals from the health sector for 5-10 days and come up with different business ideas by observing and asking lots of questions.  Your objective is to begin the process of starting a business that solves a real-world problem in the health sector  You may have an idea for this specific sector but you don’t need one. 

Entrepreneurial Work Term and Entrepreneurial Internship in the ocean sector: You will “job shadow” various professionals from the ocean sector for 5-10 days and come up with different business ideas by observing and asking lots of questions.  Your objective is to begin the process of starting a business that solves a real-world problem in the ocean sector  You may have an idea for this specific sector but you don’t need one. 

Please Note: even if you submit your application through MCE's website, your application will not be eligible unless you have also applied through your Coop office.

Each student will participate in at least one additional education/training activity.  Options include:

An entrepreneurial externship is a mini-internship within a local business where you will get the opportunity to job shadow employees, observe, ask questions and seek solutions to challenges that the company faces. You'll gain practical hands-on training to identify possible business ideas and receive backstage access to industries that are in need of innovation. This is your chance to explore real-world business challenges that have the potential to become business ideas and receive the training to increase your chance of success.

If selected, you will have a day of training from MCE on May 31 and job shadow for 2-4 days during June 4-7 and/or June 25-28. Deadline to apply is May 26.
